Scripture contains two groups of passages that must be read together. Some speak of God’s preservation and believers’ assurance: no one will snatch Christ’s sheep from the Father’s hand, and nothing will separate them from the love of God. Others warn about falling away and call believers to remain, hold fast, and stay watchful. Christians differ on how to reconcile these passages; neither group should be disregarded.
What does the Bible say about this?
- Jesus says that His sheep have eternal life, will never perish, and no one will snatch them from the Father’s hand (John 10:27–29); the Father keeps all that He has given the Son (John 6:37–40).
- Nothing will separate believers from the love of God (Rom 8:35–39); He who began a good work will carry it on until the day of Christ (Phil 1:6); believers are kept by God’s power through faith (1 Pet 1:3–5).
- The branch that does not remain in the vine is thrown out and withers (John 15:1–6).
- Being presented as holy and blameless is conditional: “if indeed you continue” in the faith, firmly established and steadfast (Col 1:21–23); you are saved if you hold firmly to what was preached (1 Cor 15:1–2); the one who endures to the end will be saved (Matt 24:12–13); let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall (1 Cor 10:12).
- Serious warnings about falling away—Heb 6:4–6; 10:26–31; 2 Pet 2:20–22.
- Interpretations differ: some understand the warnings as addressed to those who only outwardly belonged to the faith; others see them as a real possibility of a believer losing salvation; still others interpret them differently. No position is selected here.

John 10:27–29
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
Romans 8:35–39
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ: tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness of the body, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written: For Your sake we are killed all day long; we are counted as sheep destined for slaughter. 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 15:1–6
1 I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and withers; and such branches are gathered and thrown into the fire, and they are burned.
Hebrews 6:4–6
4 For it is impossible—for those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift and became partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 who tasted the good spoken word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and who have fallen away—to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify the Son of God in themselves again and put Him to open shame.
Hebrews 10:26–31
26 For if we sin willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation that will devour the adversaries. 28 If anyone who rejected the law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses, is punished with death, 29 of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, considered the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know Him who said: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” says the Lord. And again: “The Lord will judge His people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God!
John 6:37–40
37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and whoever comes to Me I will never cast out, 38 for I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of the Father who sent Me. 39 And this is the will of the Father who sent Me: that I should lose nothing of all that He has given Me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life; and I will raise him up on the last day.
Philippians 1:6
being confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ,
1 Peter 1:3–5
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has given us new birth through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead to a living hope, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who are being guarded by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Colossians 1:21–23
21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your minds because of your evil deeds, 22 He has now reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, so as to present you holy, blameless, and above reproach in His sight, 23 if indeed you continue firmly established and steadfast in the faith, and are not moved away from the hope of the Gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, became a minister.
1 Corinthians 15:1–2
1 I remind you, brothers and sisters, of the Gospel I preached to you, which you received and in which you stand, 2 by which you are also saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
Matthew 24:12–13
12 and because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold; 13 but the one who endures to the end will be saved.
1 Corinthians 10:12
So, whoever thinks he stands, let him watch out lest he fall.
2 Peter 2:20–22
20 For if, after escaping the world's defilements through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter state is worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 But what the true proverb says has happened to them: “A dog returns to its own vomit,” and, “A washed pig goes back to wallow in the mud.”
