Lesson 1. Where Faith Comes From

Faith is mentioned as early as the Book of Genesis, when Abel brought an offering to God by faith. Faith is also mentioned in the Book of Revelation. During the Great Tribulation, the saints will need patience and faith.

If people receive salvation and eternal life through faith, receive healing and miracles, and gain victory in various areas of life, then this topic should be among the most important.

If something does not work out for us in faith, we should not say that faith does not work. We need to learn again and grow.

Faith is not merely knowledge; it is unwavering confidence. That is why we need to make an effort and learn in order to have undiluted faith.

Where does faith come from?

Faith is the greatest source of power available to humanity.

By faith, Moses commanded the sea to part. By faith, the prophet Elijah shut up the heavens for three years. By faith, many people received miraculous deliverance from diseases that medicine cannot cure.

  • Faith gives a person access to the impossible.
  • Faith makes the invisible visible.
  • Faith makes a person superhuman.

Faith is the only thing by which a person can please God.

Heb. 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please God.

By faith, a person can survive any circumstances, and God favors those who live by faith.

Heb. 10:38 Now the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.

We need faith for everything: for salvation, healing, deliverance, prosperity, and protection.

The Bible says that faith can come in three ways.

1. Faith comes by hearing

Rom. 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God [in Greek: by the word of Christ].

The Word is like a seed, and first of all, it must be sown. If we want to reap, we must sow the seed.

By reading and studying the Bible, a person gains knowledge of God and His will, and faith begins to grow within them.

2. Faith also comes from hearing the Word

We can hear the Word directly from God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, as well as from God's people.

Acts 11:13–14 He told us how he had seen an angel standing in his house, who said to him: “Send men to Joppa and summon Simon who is called Peter; he will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved.”

The words “He will tell you words by which you and all your household will be saved” show us that people are saved by hearing the Word! This is an example of “faith comes by hearing.”

3. Faith comes from the Word of the Lord

The more you meditate on His Word, the more knowledge you gain about Him and His will. Faith comes together with knowledge.

Unbelief is faith in the wrong things, which are contrary to the Word of God. Unbelief comes from the words and opinions of people who do not know the Word of the Lord. People may speak facts, truth, and falsehoods, but only the Word of God is truth. And truth is above everything.

If you do not accept the Word of God as truth, you will not be able to enter the world of faith.

By living by faith, you leave behind everything your eyes see, your ears hear, and your fingers touch. You enter another world—the world of faith.

In the world of faith, you must submit to the Word of God; otherwise, you will not see the result.

To walk by faith, you must understand that the Word of God is absolute truth, valid under all circumstances.

4. Faith Comes from What Is Seen

John 2:23 When He was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did.

The reason this path to faith exists is that not everyone has read or heard the Word of God. For such people, seeing is a good way to receive faith. But this way of receiving faith is primarily intended for unbelievers.

A royal official came to Jesus and asked Him to heal his son.

John 4:48–53 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe.” The royal official said to Him, “Lord, come before my son dies.” Jesus said to him, “Go; your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him, “Your son lives.” So he asked them the hour when he began to get better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.” So the father knew that it was at that very hour when Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.

Indeed, everyone in the royal official’s household believed when they saw this miracle.

The miracles that take place among us must not be ignored or devalued—everyone should see them. This is not for human glory; it is for faith.

However, believers are better off relying on faith that comes from the word: it lays a foundation because the word is heard. Faith through what is seen has a temporary effect, because it is held in the mind without the seed being sown in the heart.

5. Faith Comes from the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:9…to another, faith by the same Holy Spirit.

Faith is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and it can be received supernaturally. If such a path to faith exists, then we should earnestly desire it and pray for it.

Conclusion

  • We must teach people that faith can come to you through hearing the word, through seeing miracles, and through the Holy Spirit.
  • Faith comes through hearing and seeing and is received as a gift; however, it cannot be measured or felt.
  • Faith is not static but changeable, so we must continually grow so that faith produces results.

Prayer on the Topic

  • Give thanks to God for the Word, for the miracles, and for the Holy Spirit that we have.
  • Ask God to help you hear better, see better and notice more, discern better, and receive from the Spirit.
