In the New Testament, baptism is closely connected with conversion and salvation (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; 1 Peter 3:21), while salvation is also described as a gift by grace through faith, not from works (Ephesians 2:8–9). Christians differ in how they understand this connection: as a condition, as a sign and seal of faith, or otherwise. Both sets of passages should be taken into account.
What does the Bible say about this?
- The one who believes and is baptized will be saved (Mark 16:16; the ending of Mark 16:9–20 is absent from some manuscripts, and in FBE it appears in double brackets).
- Peter calls people to repent and be baptized “for the forgiveness of sins” (Acts 2:38); Ananias tells Saul to be baptized and wash away his sins, calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 22:16).
- Baptism “saves” figuratively—not by removing dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience (1 Peter 3:21).
- Believers were buried with Christ in baptism and raised with Him through faith (Romans 6:3–4; Colossians 2:12); all who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ, and all are sons of God through faith (Galatians 3:26–27).
- It is said that we are saved by grace through faith, not from works (Ephesians 2:8–9); everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:9–13); in Cornelius’s household, the Spirit came upon those who heard the word, and afterward Peter ordered them to be baptized (Acts 10:44–48).
- Paul says that Christ sent him not to baptize, but to evangelize (1 Corinthians 1:14–17).
- Conclusion: 1 Corinthians 1 concerns disputes in the church over whose disciple someone was; this passage does not deny baptism (see Romans 6:3–4).
- Interpretations differ: whether baptism is a condition of salvation, a sign and seal of faith, or something else; Scripture says neither that baptism is unrelated to salvation nor that an outward rite is effective independently of faith.

They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” 48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
Romans 6:3–4
