How Can You Hear God?

October 19, 2026

Scripture says that God spoke in the past in many ways, but “in these last days” He has spoken through His Son; the written Word of God is an accessible source of revelation, useful for teaching, and equipping us for every good work. Scripture also describes instances when the Spirit spoke to people, but it does not provide universal instructions for hearing guidance for every decision; impressions are to be tested.

What Does the Bible Say About This?

  • God spoke many times and in many ways through the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken through His Son (Heb 1:1–2).
  • Paul writes about Scripture, inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness; it makes a person ready for every good work (2 Tim 3:15–17).
  • Faith comes from hearing the word of Christ (Rom 10:17).
  • Jesus says that His sheep hear His voice and follow Him (John 10:27); all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God (Rom 8:14).
  • In Acts 13:1–3, the Holy Spirit told the church to set apart Barnabas and Saul while they were serving the Lord and fasting. This is an account of a specific instance.
  • Do not believe every spirit—test the spirits (1 John 4:1).
  • Conclusion: John 10:27 and Romans 8:14 speak of belonging to Christ and being led by the Spirit, but they do not promise individual audible guidance for every everyday decision. An inner voice, feeling, sign, dream, or coincidence is not identified in Scripture as a universal way of receiving God’s guidance; these should be tested by Scripture.
