What does the Bible say about itself?

October 19, 2026

The Bible speaks about “Scripture” in several passages: Paul writes about Scripture as inspired by God and useful for teaching; prophecy in Scripture comes from God through people moved by the Holy Spirit; Jesus says that the Scriptures speak about Him; John states that the purpose of his book is faith and life. These words were spoken about specific writings of their time and individual books; applying them to the entire Bible is an inference from several texts, not a separate statement. They do not define the Bible’s contents or prove its reliability.

What the Bible Says About This

  • Paul reminds Timothy that the sacred writings he has known since childhood are able to lead him to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus, and writes about Scripture as inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped for every good work (2 Tim 3:15–17).
  • Peter writes that prophecy in Scripture did not originate in human will: people spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit (2 Pet 1:20–21).
  • The risen Jesus told His disciples that everything written about Him in the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms had to be fulfilled, and He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures (Luke 24:44–45).
  • John writes that his book was written so that readers might believe in Christ and have life; he notes that Jesus performed other signs that are not recorded in it (John 20:30–31).
  • The psalmist calls the Word of God a lamp for his path (Ps 119:105).

2 Peter 3:15–16

15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom God gave him. 16 He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
