Dmitriy Leo. Parable “Humility Is Rewarded”

December 22, 2014

Dmitriy Leo shared a parable about how humility brings a reward. When the beggar headed for the door, the king’s heart was touched by his humility, and he called out after him.

Parable “Humility Is Rewarded”

A man came to the king’s palace. The king heard him knocking at the gate and sent a servant to open it for the guest. “Go and see who it is.” The servant went downstairs and opened the door. “Who is it?” the king asked. “It is a poor man asking for alms,” the servant replied. “He wants something to eat or something like that.” And the king said, “All right, invite him up here.”

The poor man came up and sat before the king. The king said, “So, what do you want?” The man asked, “Just some food.” The king said to his servant, “Pretend that you are bringing him some food.” And the servant brought out an invisible plate and placed it in front of the poor man. The king said, “Eat your fill and be happy.” And the poor man, simply playing along with the king, pretended to eat. “Is it tasty?” the king asked. “Yes, it’s delicious.”

After the poor man had eaten, he stood up and thanked the king: “My lord, thank you very much for the food. I am full.”

When the beggar headed for the door, the king’s heart was touched by his humility, and he called out after him. “Wait, my friend. Your humility deserves a real reward. I want to give you not only food, but everything you need, so that you will never be in need again.”
