Train stations… very, very noisy. The weather… very, very hot. The trains… very, very old. The journey is pure “pleasure.” This is real missionary life! Today, we spent four hours traveling by train from Jakarta to Bandung, which is located high in the mountains. Unlike Jakarta, the air here is very clean.

We were put up in a very nice five-star hotel and served authentic Indonesian food. What can I say? I prefer European cuisine! All traditional Indonesian dishes have a sweet-and-bitter taste. Almost all of them are fried in oil and sauces. All the salads are hot. Finding an ordinary green salad here is nearly impossible.

Every day, when I look at the menu, I remember our salads… Oh! I miss them so much! I try to eat more fish here because there is so much of it.

You cannot drink water in cafés or restaurants in any form, or you may catch all kinds of nasty bugs. You can only drink high-quality bottled water that you opened yourself and drink yourself. The unsanitary conditions are extreme everywhere. Once, Darrel Stott drank some iced water at a café and caught some terrible virus. The virus literally knocked Darrel out, and he “passed out” right during the meeting. We had to call an ambulance. At the hospital, doctors discovered that Darrel had some very dangerous strain of E. coli.

Everyone here keeps urging me to try Luwak coffee, but I still cannot bring myself to do it. They say it is the tastiest and most expensive coffee in the world. One cup of prepared coffee costs US$150.

The Most Expensive Coffee in the World—Luwak

I am not a coffee lover at all, and then they told me all about this “Luwak”… Disgusting! This coffee is obtained from an animal’s excrement. A luwak is a small carnivore that enjoys eating ripe coffee cherries. It loves these beans so much that it often overeats, and much of the coffee passes through its gastrointestinal tract virtually unchanged, merely treated somewhat by digestive enzymes. The soft layer is digested in the animal’s intestines, while the beans become infused with fragrant civetone.

Previously, Luwak was obtained only by collecting feces in the wild, but today more and more producers are fattening the animals on special farms. (If you are interested, watch a video about how Luwak coffee is produced:)

This evening, I preached in Indonesia for the first time. It is an unusual and interesting church, filled with Jewish attributes and symbolism. Its name is “King of Kings.” The church custom is to remove one’s shoes. I had to take off my shoes too and preach in my socks. It was the first time in my life that I had preached in socks!

After the prayer, people came out and testified about healings. However, I understood almost nothing because they spoke Indonesian, and the interpreter translated only sporadically. Moreover, the interpreter himself spoke English poorly.

In short, I saw someone who previously could not squat doing squats. One man could not walk properly, but after the prayer he began to run. Something clicked in a woman’s neck, and she was able to move it. Another woman had problems with her reproductive organs (she pointed to her lower abdomen), but the problem disappeared and all the pain was gone. Some people began to see better, others to hear better. And so on.

After the prayer, one man got up from a wheelchair and walked. I do not know whether he had been able to walk before, but with the help of others he stood up and began walking in front of the stage.

After the service, the church leaders wanted to do something nice for me and fed me delicacies. I ate a large crab, fish, huge shrimp, and many different delicious dishes (in the photos below).

I ask everyone who knows me to pray for the healing crusade in Indonesia. It is not easy for me to preach, pray, and communicate in English. I need grace and a gift from the Lord. Also, please pray for my safety… in restaurants… I want to live!
Thank you.

With love, Dmitriy Leo.
