Why Did Jesus Die?

October 19, 2026

The New Testament says that Jesus died for our sins, according to the Scriptures. He gave His life as a ransom for many, bore our sins in His body, and brought people to God; His death is called an expression of God’s love.

What Does the Bible Say About This?

  • Paul presents this as the first thing he received: Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures (1 Cor 15:3). The author of Hebrews writes that Christ appeared once to do away with sin by His sacrifice (Heb 9:26).
  • Jesus Himself says that the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).
  • Paul sees proof of God’s love in the fact that Christ died for us while we were still sinners; through the death of His Son, we who were enemies were reconciled to God (Rom 5:8–10).
  • Peter writes that Christ bore our sins in His body on the tree so that we might live for righteousness (1 Pet 2:24); the righteous One suffered for the unrighteous to bring us to God (1 Pet 3:18).
  • The prophet Isaiah speaks of the One who suffered for our transgressions: the Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all (Isa 53:4–6). Peter applies these words to Christ (1 Pet 2:24).
