What should I do if I commit the same sin again and again?

October 19, 2026

Scripture answers this way: confess your sin to God—He forgives those who confess, and Jesus Christ remains our Advocate; do not let sin reign and surrender yourself to God; use the way of escape God provides in temptation; do not remain alone—believers are called to help one another when they fall. This is not a formula: Scripture does not promise that sin will disappear through a prescribed sequence of actions.

What Does the Bible Say About This?

  • John writes that if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness; whoever says that he has no sin deceives himself (1 John 1:8–9).
  • John writes so that his readers will not sin, but if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous, the atoning sacrifice for our sins (1 John 2:1–2); there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ (Rom. 8:1).
  • If someone falls into any sin, those who are spiritual are instructed to restore him gently, watching themselves, and to bear one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:1–2).
  • God is faithful: in the temptation referred to in this passage, He will not allow it to be beyond our ability to endure and will provide a way of escape so that we can bear it (1 Cor. 10:13); this is not a promise concerning every difficulty in life.
  • Paul urges believers not to let sin reign in their mortal bodies and to present themselves to God, because believers are under grace (Rom. 6:12–14); the author of Hebrews calls us to lay aside every burden and the sin that so easily entangles us and to run with our eyes fixed on Jesus (Heb. 12:1–2).

1 John 1:8–2:2

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin; but if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Romans 6:12–14

12 Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. 13 Do not offer the parts of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and offer the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
