The word “Trinity” does not appear in the Bible. Scripture affirms that God is one; distinguishes the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; calls the Word God; equates lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God; and mentions the Father, Son, and Spirit together in several places. The theological term “Trinity” refers to a conclusion drawn from these texts.
What Does the Bible Say About This?
- Deuteronomy 6:4 affirms that God is one.
- The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct: at Jesus’ baptism, the Son comes out of the water, the Spirit of God descends upon Him, and a voice sounds from heaven (Matt. 3:16–17); Jesus says that the Father will give another Helper, the Spirit of truth (John 14:16–17).
- John 1:1–3 speaks of the Word: the Word was with God, was called God, and through Him everything came into being; in John 1:14, this Word became flesh, and His glory is called the glory of the one and only Son from the Father. Acts 5:3–4 equates lying to the Holy Spirit with lying to God.
- The Father, Son, and Spirit are mentioned together: in the blessing of 2 Cor. 13:14—the Lord Jesus Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit—and in 1 Pet. 1:2—God the Father, the Spirit, and Jesus Christ.
- Interpretations differ: the disagreement begins with how these texts should be brought together and how passages about the Son and the Holy Spirit should be understood. Therefore, the biblical statements themselves should be distinguished from the theological formula built on them.
