What should you do when you are afraid?

October 19, 2026

Scripture says “do not be afraid” many times and gives the reason: God’s presence with a person. The psalmist says plainly that when he is afraid, he trusts in God. Many of these words were addressed to specific people (Israel, Joshua); Christians apply them as a testimony to God’s faithfulness.

What Does the Bible Say About This?

  • God tells Israel not to be afraid because He is with them, and promises to strengthen and help them (Isa. 41:10).
  • The psalmist says that when he is afraid, he trusts in God (Ps. 56:3–4); the Lord is called the light, salvation, and protector of life (Ps. 27:1).
  • One can pass through the valley of the shadow of death without fearing evil because God is near (Ps. 23:4).
  • Jesus leaves His peace with His disciples and tells them not to let their hearts be troubled (John 14:27).
  • God has given us not a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Tim. 1:7).
