In my opinion, the story of David and Goliath contains much symbolism and spiritual subtext. I saw several images there. Saul is doubt. David is faith. Goliath is fear. I decided to replace their names with these images, and a very interesting story emerged, in which many parallels can be seen.
The words I specifically changed are underlined.
(1 Samuel 17:4–9)
From the demonic camp came a champion named Fear from Hell. He was six cubits and a span tall.
He wore a bronze helmet on his head and was dressed in bronze armor weighing five thousand shekels.
He had bronze greaves on his legs, and a bronze javelin was slung over his back.
The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield bearer went ahead of him.
Fear stood and shouted to the Christians drawn up for battle: – Why have you come out and lined up for battle? Am I not a demon, and are you not slaves of Doubt? Choose a man and let him come down to me.
If he is able to fight me and kill me, we will become your slaves; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our slaves and serve us.
(1 Samuel 17:32–37)
Faith said to Doubt: – Let no one lose heart because of this Fear; your servant will go and fight him.
Doubt replied: – You cannot go out against this Fear and fight him; you are only a boy, while he has been a warrior from his youth.
But Faith said to Doubt: – Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,
I pursued it, struck it, and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it attacked me, I seized it by the hair, struck it, and killed it.
Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Fear will become like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.
The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Fear as well. Doubt said to Faith: – Go, and may the Lord be with you!
(1 Samuel 17:43–50)
Fear said to Faith: “Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?” And Fear cursed Faith by his gods.
“Come here,” he said, “and I will give your flesh to the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the field!”
Faith said to Fear: “You come against me with a sword, spear, and javelin, but I come against you in the Name of the Lord of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
Today the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. Today I will give the corpses of the demonic army to the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the field, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel!
Then everyone gathered here will know that the Lord saves not by sword or spear, for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will deliver all of you into our hands.
As Fear drew near to attack him, Faith quickly ran toward the battle line to meet him.
Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck Fear in the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
So Faith prevailed over Fear with a sling and a stone. Without a sword in his hand, he struck down Fear and killed him.
