Dmitriy Leo. There is a reason why I do not shout when I preach

February 27, 2017

If you like shouting, shout as much as you wish, but you are putting your health at risk. Be careful! This message may anger or offend you.

Do not tell me this will not affect you because you are special. Your body is subject to the laws of physics. When you shout, you place stress on your body. Your listeners may like it, but you are “killing” your body. This is one reason why many preachers have heart problems.

Cortisol is called the stress hormone because it is produced exclusively in stressful situations. What does cortisol do? During emotional stress, cortisol prevents blood pressure from falling to critically low levels. It affects the blood vessels by constricting them and thereby raising blood pressure. Even a short period of stress causes cortisol levels to rise enough to easily break down muscle tissue. Therefore, stressful situations should be avoided.

Why Does a Preacher Shout?

Reason 1

Some people shout because they imitate generals of God and evangelists whose videos they have watched. However, shouting is not a sign of anointing. They had to do it. Today we have portable, self-contained sound systems and wireless lavalier microphones, but they did not have these before. Even when gathering a small crowd outdoors to tell them something, they had to speak (shout) loudly enough for people to hear.

I know what I am talking about because I conducted a 30-day crusade across Indonesia. Sometimes I stood before thousands of people, but the crowd noise and the quality of the venue and sound equipment were such that I had to shout into the microphone so the interpreter could understand at least something I was saying. It was exactly the same in the days when sound equipment did not yet exist or was of very poor quality.

In ancient times, people shouted mostly because amplification equipment was unavailable.

Reason 2

Some preachers are emotional, and shouting is their distinctive feature. We have nothing against that, but we should not imitate other people's emotions. Shouting is not anointing. I feel sorry for such people because many of them have heart problems.

3 reasons

Immature preachers, or those with low self-esteem, start shouting to create the illusion of power. And most people respond emotionally to such an emotional delivery. This is always used in KVN, music shows, talk shows, sports, concerts, business training sessions, and so on. Well… they have started using it in church too.

Unfortunately, some preachers have retrained from being God’s people into motivational speakers. This does not change the listeners’ lives, but the listeners like it. And this does not require anointing… the main thing is to have more jokes, examples from life, and words about how good people are and how everything will be fine for them…

What to do

If you are truly “carried away” by the revelations you are releasing now, dynamically raising and lowering your voice while preaching is fine. It is natural.

But preaching in a loud voice so that people do not fall asleep, or to create the appearance of anointing and power… is foolish. God does not come because of our shouting.

I have met preachers who practiced this, and they had very poor health, especially heart problems. What else could be expected? A person shouts for an entire hour, cortisol levels reach their peak, blood pressure skyrockets, all the muscles are tense, the blood vessels spasm… the price of “anointing.”

This is why, after the service, such preachers “crawl” home completely exhausted and need an entire day to recover after such ministry.

Conclusion

Let us stop entertaining people; church is not a show. We can create an emotional “buzz,” and people will leave feeling that it was “awesome” today, but this will not change their lives. These emotions will disappear the next day.

We must be natural, without copying anyone in the hope that it will make us stronger. No! It will make you weaker!

It is better to walk with God and learn to move in the Holy Spirit. Then, whether we shout, speak softly, or whisper, miracles will happen in the audience, and people’s lives will be changed.

Be blessed!
With love, Dmitriy Leo.
