Lesson 4. Strategy for Spiritual Warfare. A practical guide by Dmitriy Leo, senior pastor of Father’s Blessing Church. The purpose of this school is to equip Christians for proper and safe spiritual warfare.
Jesus is our best example in spiritual warfare. Look at how Jesus responded when Satan attacked Him in the wilderness. Jesus answered with the Word of God—it is written. This was not merely a conversation; it was a real epic battle in which both used the sword of the Spirit—the Word of God.
Ephesians 6:17…and the sword of the Spirit (take up), which is the Word of God.
Literally—take up the sword of the Spirit. This is a sword against which evil spiritual forces cannot stand.
Which Scriptures should you use? Bible passages should be selected individually for each situation. At the end of this teaching, you will find many Bible passages suitable for spiritual warfare.
At the same time, to make it easier to determine what to do, it is important to understand the ways God may act. Therefore:
First, you need to pray to God and await revelation (instruction) about how exactly to respond in a given situation. Sometimes you need to fight, sometimes you need to wait, and sometimes you need to submit.
Second, you need to look in the Bible to see what God forbids and condemns. Against such things, you can pray boldly, basing your prayer on the written Word of God. The spoken Word of God and the written Word of God are equally the Word of God.
The Bible gives many instructions about “how” and “what” we can pray.
1) The Bible describes how God confused the languages and scattered the people who were building the Tower of Babel.
(Gen. 11:6–8) 6 And the Lord said: Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they have begun to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech. 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
If this is how God stopped those people, then we can pray for God to divide and scatter people who have united to do evil. When evil people stop understanding one another (become divided in their opinions), they will go their separate ways.
2) The Bible describes how God sent division into the enemy armies’ camp, and they turned against one another.
(2 Chron. 20:22–23) 22 And when they began to sing and praise, the Lord set ambushes against the Ammonites, Moabites, and the inhabitants of Mount Seir who had come against Judah, and they were defeated. 23 For the Ammonites and Moabites rose up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to destroy and annihilate them; and when they had finished with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped destroy one another. Luke 11:17 But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself will be desolated, and a house divided against itself will fall.
We can pray for God to send division and opposition among evil people. May God send division among those who are plotting evil against humanity, countries, cities, families, children, Christianity, and so on.
3) The Bible describes how the leader, Goliath, was struck down, and the entire army became terrified and fled.
1 Sam. 17:51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine, took his sword, drew it from its sheath, struck him, and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.
The Church can pray to God concerning a specific evil leader. When there is no one to initiate and promote evil, the followers also calm down.
At the same time, we are not opposing the person; we are asking God to deal with that person. God does not desire anyone to perish, but for all to come to repentance. We can be at peace, knowing that God will make the right decision about what needs to be done in this person’s life and how to work with their heart.
Therefore, Christians must first pray to God, asking Him to do certain things. Then God, in turn, will release angels for the assignment. This is not our battle in the heavenly realms; it is the battle of the Lord’s angels. Our task is to ask God; everything else is not our work.
Secondly, Christians should release and declare the Word of God over people, situations, and territories in prayer. This is also an instruction for the angels of the Lord. Angels know the written Word of God well and carry it out without question.
This is the correct way to engage in spiritual warfare and is within the boundaries of the Word of God.
